Production Test

"Automation solutions to improve your production quality and efficiency with the aim of providing your customers with known good product"

Production Test is the verification of the production process through electrical and mechanical tests. Use automated production test to reduce waste due to manufacturing process faults by tightening the feedback loop with timely and detailed test information.

Each production test system is usually unique. However many of these test systems can use common modular components as part of the overall solution. This reduces the lifetime cost of the test equipment as the standard modules (such as power supplies and multimeters) can be reused in future test systems.

Nightside aims to keep custom electronics and mechanicals to a minimum in its test systems. The software of the test system enables the customer to modify test limits and specification files without recompilation of the software. This allows new product variants and part changes to be catered for.

Interfacing to existing business systems is usually possible through general database drivers to enable access to serial number, process stage and product tables. This allows the test system to verify serial number input and product types.

Test Data history can be a valuable resource in tracking down production faults and component tolerance shifts. This information can be exported and manipulated in standard PC applications such as Microsoft Excel.

What to expect in a Production Test system?

A production test system can simply test products to a desired specification. However when used in conjunction with other business systems they can provide a significantly richer set of information than simply 'Pass' or 'Fail'.

Linking the production test system to serial number and product databases allows you to ensure that previous process stages have been completed before beginning the test. Outputting the test results to a database enables historical trend analysis (very useful when tracking part changes) and a starting point for product service enquiries.

Some questions to consider to ensure you get right test solution:

  • What is the product lifetime, how long do you expect the system will operate (months, years)?
  • Do you run multiple manufacturing shifts?
  • Who will be maintaining the test system once it is operating in Production (full hand over of information to internal staff, service contract with Nightside, maintenance contract with Nightside)?
  • What type of service assistance do you need (expected response time, normal business hours, 24hr assistance, preventative service schedules)?
  • What kind of data history, analysis capabilities and reporting would you like available (database types, export to spreadsheets, Pareto charts, histograms)
  • What operator training is required?

Why your company should use Nightside for Production Test:

  • Achieve consistent and repeatable product quality
  • Improve production line productivity (throughput, efficiency, floor space)
  • Install modular, reconfigurable and reusable test solutions
  • Expand capabilities through access to people and skills you don’t currently have
  • Reduce overheads
  • Use test data to provide product history and traceability
  • Interface production test systems with existing business systems
  • Tighten the production process feedback loop
  • Produce a detailed test report for each product tested
  • Reduce field failures rates and continuously improve reliability
